| ATTACK ON KILCLUNEY |
| VOLUNTEERS 9th SEPTEMBER 2000 |
The following are some of the media reports that appeared in papers following the attack on Kilcluney Volunteers on the night of Saturday 9th September. We would like to emphasis that this is by no means the first or the worst attack against Loyalist Flute bands, indeed K.V.F.B. have been the victims of similar attacks at least 6 times in the last 10 years. Many other bands have also been involved in similar incidents, and many band members (children, women and men) have recieved serious injurys as a result. The media, along with various politicians, have however largely ignored these attacks. Partly because we have taken them for granted but mostly because they do not wish to show the intimidation and persecution that this element of our culture regularly receives. It is our belief that it does not suit them to advertise the intolerance towards marching bands. It is up to the individual to decide why this is the case. In the case of this attack the Committee of Kilcluney Volunteers, along with the Ulster Bands Association, decided that as many people as possible should be told the details of what happened. We endeavoured to inform all elements of the media the seriousness of the incident. Both regional Television companies were contacted (BBC and UTV), but even though the BBC did make a contact again with the band to confirms facts, the incident made little impact other than a mention on a few radio bulletins. The Main newspapers in Northern Ireland also recieved statements from the band, the U.B.A. and our local political representatives. It is particularly interesting to note that the paper percieved by many to be 'Unionist' gave significantly less coverage than the blatantly Nationalist paper. Local papers were however on the whole very sympathitic, and we would particularly like to thank the Ulster Gazzette (Armagh) for bothering to ascertain all the facts of the case. Overall this should be seen as a valuable lesson to band members and Loyalists alike. If you do push your story you will get coverage, some may not be very good, but people will learn about the incident. If you tell no-one, the only people who will ever know will be yourselves and a few locals. As a result of this we are going to compile a list of contact names and telephone numbers of all the local media. If you can help please e-mail us. It will include the Television companies, main papers and all regional newspapers.
